How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Heat pumps work on the same basic principle as an air conditioner, in the sense that it simply replaces warm air with cool air or vice versa. The biggest difference between a heat pump and an AC system is the way that the air is conditioned. Heat pumps use the air outside or the ground temperature to enact change in the temperature in your home. These air-source and ground-source heat pumps are efficient because, unlike traditional heaters, they do not use a fuel source to directly heat or cool the air.

Thousands of Happy Customers

Was very happy with the quick response to my call for help. It was a very good experience even though it was a stressful situation. They worked with me and were empathetic to my problem and my limitations. They were very thorough in explaining the situation and what needed to be done, explaining and showing me the problem. Once it was decided what I had to do they were quick to get to work and completed the job in a very timely manner. All in all it was a stressful but good experience

– Susan C.

All Pro was awesome we called and they came the same day when our shower drain was leaking into our downstairs ceiling…..the service person was so nice and was very fast and very professional. The price was very reasonable and affordable. They did an outstanding job and we would recommend this company for all your servicing needs. This is the second time using this company, the first was for our water heater and they replaced it fast and very affordable the same day. They came at around 5 and was here until around 9 fixing not only our leaking shower drain but our water pressure value needed to be replaced. They did both and I do not think we would have gotten a better deal or a nicer person to come and do the repairs. All Pro is definitely the people we will be calling for all our plumbing, heating and air conditioning needs from now on.

– Pamela M.

They came to our rescue on January 8, 2018. we had a clogged toilet that overflowed all the way to the downstairs bathroom it was a horrific scene that day. That is when we decided to call All Pro Plumbing. Talked to a nice lady on the phone gave her our info and told us would call back to ensure us someone would come out to help. Within minutes gave us a response time and told us someone will be there within the hour. Sure enough that is when they showed up and quickly diagnosed the problem, went to work, and unclogged whatever was in there that needed to be unclogged. They were efficient, respectful, and professional. They also checkout out other things to make sure that toilet was working fine before they left. Great customer service!

– Vincent M.

Gary was absolutely amazing today. He was friendly, knowledgeable! It seemed a little pricey but our problem needed to be addressed immediately. Great customer service. I would definitely recommend!

– Danielle O.

I would recommend ALL PRO Plumbing to anyone that is looking for good professional service. They installed a sink and garbage disposal for me and did a great job. Their response time is quick. Always either the same day, or the next day

How Do I Know If My Heat Pump Needs Repair or Just Regular Maintenance?

If your heat pump’s performance has suddenly dropped—like it’s not heating or cooling the way it used to—you might need a repair. Unusual sounds (like grinding or rattling), inconsistent temperatures, or higher energy bills are all signs something’s wrong. Routine maintenance is more about prevention, like checking filters, refrigerant levels, and electrical connections to keep everything running smoothly. If you’re unsure, give us a call for a free quote—we’ll help you figure it out.

What Are the Most Common Issues That Need Repair in Heat Pump Systems?

The most common repairs involve refrigerant leaks, faulty thermostats, compressor failures, and electrical issues. Refrigerant leaks can prevent your system from heating or cooling properly. Electrical problems could cause short cycling (turning off and on too quickly), and a bad compressor means the system can’t transfer heat at all. These are complex components, so it’s best to have a trained technician inspect the issue. Early diagnosis helps avoid bigger, more expensive repairs later.

Can I Still Use My Heat Pump If It’s Acting Up, or Should I Shut It Off?

While it might be tempting to keep it running, using a malfunctioning heat pump can cause more harm than good. Continuing to run it can damage internal components or reduce energy efficiency, leading to higher bills. It’s best to shut it off and contact a licensed HVAC expert. We offer quick diagnostics and affordable heat pump services to get you back to your desired temperature in no time.

What Should I Consider Before Installing a Heat Pump System in My Ontario, CA Home?

Great question! You’ll want to consider your home’s size, insulation quality, and your typical heating and cooling needs. In Ontario, CA, where winters are mild, an air-source heat pump is usually more than enough. Also think about energy efficiency ratings (like SEER and HSPF), which impact both your comfort and utility bills. We can provide a free estimate, assess your home, and walk you through your options so you get the best fit.

How Long Does It Take to Install or Replace a Heat Pump System?

Most heat pump installations can be completed within a day, especially if we’re replacing an old unit. More complex setups or first-time installs might take a bit longer. But don’t worry—our team always aims for minimal disruption and maximum convenience. We show up on time, clean up after ourselves, and make sure you’re 100% satisfied before we leave.

Will I Need to Upgrade Other Parts of My HVAC System When I Install a New Heat Pump?

Not necessarily, but it depends on your current setup. If your ductwork is outdated, undersized, or leaking, we might recommend some upgrades to ensure peak efficiency and airflow. We’ll do a thorough inspection and give you a clear explanation of what’s needed (and what’s not), so there are no surprises. Our goal is to provide affordable, long-lasting solutions—not upsell you on things you don’t need.

What Does a Typical Heat Pump Maintenance Visit Include?

During a routine maintenance visit, we’ll inspect and clean coils, check refrigerant levels, test thermostat operation, lubricate moving parts, and examine electrical components for wear. We’ll also make sure your air filters are clean and your system is operating safely and efficiently. Regular upkeep can significantly extend the lifespan of your heat pump and improve your home’s overall energy efficiency. It’s like giving your heat pump a health check-up!

How Often Should I Schedule Heat Pump Maintenance in Southern California?

We recommend scheduling maintenance at least twice a year—once before summer and once before winter. Since your heat pump works year-round to handle both heating and cooling, it experiences more wear and tear than a typical furnace or air conditioner. Seasonal checkups help ensure everything’s in good shape and prevent unexpected breakdowns during peak seasons when you need it most.

What Are the Benefits of Routine Heat Pump Maintenance Beyond Just “Keeping It Running”?

Routine maintenance does more than just keep your system running—it keeps it running well. Regular tune-ups improve energy efficiency, which means lower bills. They also improve air quality, enhance safety, and reduce the risk of costly repairs. Plus, they give you peace of mind. Our customers often tell us they feel more confident knowing their system has been professionally inspected and prepped for the season.
