Common Air Conditioning Problems

An air conditioner that isn’t performing efficiently is a serious issue, especially during the hot summer months. At worst, it can completely stop working, making life miserable for you and your family.

It’s a good idea to be aware of some of the more common problems that can arise. While you can repair some of the issues on your own, others require professional help from a licensed HVAC technician.

The following are the most common air conditioning issues:

  • Dirty outside unit – The way your air conditioning system cools your home is that AC inside unit (evaporator) absorbs heat from your air and then transfers that heat to the outside unit (condenser). However, the condenser can’t expel heat if it’s dirty or covered with debris. Just spray the outside unit with a garden hose on a light setting. Blasting it with high-pressure water can cause the fins to bend.
  • Dirty filters – A clogged filter restricts airflow through the unit, reducing its ability to effectively provide cool air throughout your home. If you haven’t changed the filter in your AC system for months, you should do it immediately. These filters must be changed at least once a month, especially if you have several occupants and/or pets.
  • Frozen evaporator coil – The coil contains refrigerant that absorbs heat. When airflow is diminished, a layer of ice can form on the evaporator coil. When this happens, it can result in warm air or no air from your AC supply registers. This can be the result of dirty filters, obstruction in the ductwork, low refrigerant, or a combination of two or three of these circumstances.
  • Refrigerant leaks – If your unit is low on refrigerant, either it is leaking or it was undercharged at installation. If it is due to a leak, a licensed HVAC technician can repair it and charge the system with the adequate amount of refrigerant. Simply adding refrigerant is not the answer.
  • Outside fan isn’t working – If the fan on the outside unit isn’t working correctly, proper heat transfer cannot occur and the air conditioning compressor may overheat and trip the safety overload, as well as damage the compressor. You need a professional to handle this situation.
