Do you find that you are uncomfortable when you go to bed at night? Can’t seem to find the right thermostat temperature, no matter how much you fiddle with it? The fact is, no two homes are alike, but for many homeowners, there is an ideal temperature when it comes time to turn the lights out. Keep reading to learn more about what the right HVAC temperature is for when you go to sleep, courtesy of our home comfort pros at All Pro Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical.

Finding the Perfect HVAC Temperature When It’s Time to Go to Bed

As we’ve talked about before on our blog, it is usually better to turn your thermostat up during the summer—counterintuitive as that may seem. This will help to balance out your increased AC use, and maintain a stable temperature in your home. For this reason, the best temperature to keep your thermostat at on summer days is 78 degrees.

Summer nights, however, are a different matter. After heat has built up in your home during the day, you may need additional cooling power to stay comfortable through the night. If you want to save money, keep your thermostat roughly four degrees higher on summer nights than you would the rest of the year. But if you run hot and are looking to ensure your comfort, it’s usually best to keep the thermostat between 60 and 67 degrees. Obviously, this is a fairly large range, so make sure to play around to find what works best for you. You may decide you can get by running fans at night, or even opening a window to let in some fresh air. But if you sleep on the second story and find that heat gets trapped in your bedroom, feel free to turn that thermostat down a bit.

During the wintertime, it is also best to turn your thermostat down, for the same reason you turn it up during the summer (i.e. balancing costs, maintaining a consistent temperature.) But while many people adjust their HVAC temperature when they go to sleep during the summer, you shouldn’t have to adjust it much during colder months. If you are someone that consistently runs the heater during the wintertime, maintaining a stable temperature of roughly 68 degrees should keep you warm during the day, without overheating your bedroom at night.
